Snaefellsjökull National Park

What and where is Snæfellsjökull National Park?

 

- Found in Snæfellsness peninsula

- Established on June 28, 2001

- First established park in Iceland

- Home to the most famous volcano in Iceland

Attractions within the park:

 

- Djúpalónssandur beach

  • A sandy beach with black stones eroded from water and wind

  • Sandy beach and bay

  • No population

 

- Vatnshellir cave

  • Upper section: rare lava foramtions

  • Lower sections: unique carvings on the walls

  • 200 meters tall

  • Created from a volcano eruption 6,000-8,000 years ago

 

- Snæfellsjökull glacier

  • Snæfellsjökull glacier is on top of the volcano

  • 1446 meters tall

  • Global warming is causing the glacier to melt ad it is expected to disappear in about 50 years
