UNESCO World Hertiage Site

A UNESCO World Hertiage Site is a status given to an area that has influenced or impacted the cultural or physical importance of the site by United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). A hertiage site can be anything from a small building to a mountain.
Þingvellir National Park
- A National Park where the general assembly of Iceland was established in 930 AD.
- The people of this group met here every 2 weeks to create new laws on about how free people of the country would live.
- They also solved any problems or disputes people has amongst each other.
- They met here until 1798.
- In this park, they display the original Althing building and pieces of over 50 booths made up of turf and stone.
- It is believed to be that thing from the 10th century are buried under the ground.
- Some farming tools and things remain on the surface from the 18th century.
- This park and it’s old artifacts have deep value to the Icelandics and helped shaped who they are today.
1703 Census of Iceland
- Oldest census of Iceland .
- Includes key note information on things such as population, age of the people, name and social status.
- This census was believed to be performed around 1703.
- Acording to the 1703 census, in 1703, there were 50,366 people living Iceland.

Surtsey (Island)
- An island created by a volcano off the coast of Iceland.
- It is about 32 km away from Icleand's coast.
- It is being carefully protected and it is closed to any tourists and visitors.
- Scientists began studying this in 1964.
- With this island, scientisits were able to study the animals, plants, birds and bacteria that were on this island.
