What are caves in Iceland like?

 

- This occurs due to Iceland’s position on the Mid- Atlantic Ridge

- Features spectacular rock formations, naturally sclupted ice and various craters

- Caves are the life on Earth underground with flowing magma beneath it

- Some magma has cooled to make steady ground resulting in a safe path.

Where and when you can look at these volcanoes:

 

- Tours are placed in specific caves at specific seasons

- There are caves available to explore all year- round!

- In winter, visit one of Iceland’s many ice caves:

  • Vatnajökull Glacier

·Jökulsárlon Glacier

  • Lofthellir lava cave

  • Langjökull glacier

- In summer, spring and fall, indulgde in Iceland’s dry lava caves:

  • Mývatn cave

  • Borgarnes caves

  • Hveragerði cave

  • Reykjahlíð cave

 

The Þríhnúkagígur crater:

 

- Magma chamber

- 120 meters (400 ft) deep

- It was once an actice volcano that erupted 4,000 years ago but is now unactive

- Reach with an hour long  hike and a cable car ride

- Various colors; shades of brown, gold, yellow and red

- Breath- taking scenery

Tips:

 

- Stay with your guided tour

- Wear layers and prepare for any type of weather!

- Wear running shoes or boots

- No jeans
