Laugavegur trek (most popular trek)

 

  • Starts in Landmannalaugar and ends in Þórsmörk

  • 55 km long

  • Feautures rivers, mountains, a glacier, valleys and rock formations

  • Various cabins along the way

  • 4-5 day hike but turn back any time

Fimmvörðuháls hiking trail:

  • Þórsmörk to Skógar

  •  23 km long

  • Features hills, waterfalls, lava fields, volcanoes and two glaciers; Eyjafjallajökull and Mýrdalsjökull

  • Various huts along the route

  •  1-3 day trip

  • 2010 Eyjafjallajökull eruption-> creating lava fields-> formation of a new volcano

  • Good view over the South Coast of Iceland and the Þórsmörk Nature Reserve

Best times to hike/ walk:

 

- Laugavegur trek

  • Late May, throughout June, August to early September

  • Day or night

- Fimmvörðuháls hiking trail

  • Mid June to early September

  • Day or night

 

Tips for adventure:

 

- Clothing

  • Sweaters, pants, jackets

  • Short sleeves, shorts

  • Boots, shoes

  • Gloves

  • Weather is unpredictable

- Food and Water

  • Plentiful and various ->fruits, vegetables, protein and spices

  • Carry LOADS of water

  • Water purification tablets and vitamins

- Other

  • Carry a first aid kit

  • Bug spray

  • Blankets
